Match Reports & Stats
BRADENTON, FL (December 6, 2007) - The 2007 Nike Friendlies opened up today at the IMG Academy facilities with one of the marquee match-ups of the tournament; pitting the US Men's National Team under 17s against the FC DELCO U18 Academy team. The IMG facilites are absolutely spectacular with 7 bermuda grass, perfectly groomed, full-size socer pitches with all the amenities. In addition to the 15/16 and 17/18 Development Academy games, there were four international Under-17 teams competing as well: USA, Brazil, Turkey and Russia.

US MNT Under-17 '91s (Mid-Am) vs. FC DELCO U18 Academy
BRADENTON, FL (December 6, 2007) -The FC DELCO U18 Academy team kicked off their 2007/2008 season the hard way today at the Nike Friendlies against a stacked US MNT Under-17 '91 side at the IMG Academy complex. While the core of the DELCO squad is the same as the team that went to the USYSA National Final Four last year, they were missing several players due to college commitments. In addition to adding seveal new players, this team has a completely new coaching staff making this first test all the more difficult.
The intensity of the moment carried DELCO through the first ten minutes but the quality and fitness of the World Cup hardend US squad would eventually show thorough. The US' Dominguez began to find time and space down the left side; several times penetrating deep into DELCO territory until a physical challenge by DELCO's Nick Dundon brought him under control. Unfortunatley for Dundon this challenge also resulted in the games only yellow card. DELCO remained on the back foot for the remainder of the half with the majority of play taking place in their end of the pitch. It was the quality organization by the defensive unit and extremely high work rates by the midfield that kept the game from getting out of hand.
The game's first goal was the result of a dubious foul given by referee Edwin Jurisevic in a dangerous location 25y out from goal in the 18th minute. The US free kick took a wicked deflection off of Amobi Okago completely wrong footing DELCO keeper Kevin McMullen. While the goal was somewhat fortunate, the scoreline ultimately reflected the tenor of the game. The United State's second goal was a penalty that was the result of a rash challenge by DELCO's Mark Fetrow on Bryan Dominguez. While Fetrow's tackle was certainly ill-timed, Dominguez demonstrated his mastery of the "finer arts" by more than making a meal of it. He must have thought he was Francesco Totti in the quarter finals of the World Cup against the Aussies. That call still upsets me! Does it show?
If the US thought that it was going to cruise easily to a victory over the newly-formed DELCO side, Coach Alan Mezger and his all-star staff of Kevin Tryon, Ashely Kozicki, Kevin Coleman and Jeff Larentowicz had other plans. Right from the opening tap, DELCO began to put pressure on the back line of the US which became increasingly unstable as the half wore on. Andrew Dodds and Matt Heffernan started started to find time and space on the flanks; several times putting dangerous balls into the area. Dundon's workrate proved too much for Eder Arreola, and Ben Speas in the midfield allowing Joe Crowley some additional room to operate. With the play now being split evenly between the two sides, DELCO looked their most dangerous on set pieces; using their impressive height advantage of Fetrow and Kevin Strunk. Unfortunately, repeatedly poor service failed to fully exploit this advantage.
DELCO finally got the goal they worked so hard for when substitute Dante Pannell crossed an enticing ball into the area from the left flank onto the "foot" of a streaking David Cassanelli. While the goal lifted DELCO's spirit the result would remain in the US' favor as their superior fitness simply wore the untested northerners down.
