Wednesday Game
FC DELCO '91 vs. Cobb FC Chiefs Premier 92 (GA)
Orlando, FL - The FC DELCO '91 Demons got off to quick start today at this year's Disney Soccer Showcase by topping the Georgia state champions, Cobb FC Chiefs, 4 - 1 at the West Orange Soccer Complex. The Demons started off the scoring in the 3rd minute when Paz Breezeatl intercepted a flat pass across the back of the Chiefs' defence and split their defenders hitting Joe Schmid in stride. At the top of the 18, Schmid pulled up with the ball, cut right and netted the shot for the first goal of the game. From this point on the Demons had the Chiefs on the back foot.
The quality and size of the pitches suited the Demons style of play very well allowing them to play a possession-oriented game. For long periods of time, the Demons were able to pass the ball across the back while probing forward looking for any weaknesses in the Chiefs' defense. On the other side, the Chiefs found little time on the ball with the Demons playing a high-pressure defense on all thirds of the pitch and holding a very high defensive line.
In the 23rd minute the Chiefs were able to put some pressure on the Demons' defense deep in their own half. One nice buildup saw the Chiefs midfield play a wide ball deep into Demons territory. The Chiefs' winger was able to gain the end line, drive the near post and chip a ball to the top of the six. With the ensuing confusion and the Demons unable to clear their lines, Sam Heller scored an own goal for the Chiefs, while trying to execute a clearance, equalizing the score line. It should be noted that this was one of the few episodes where the well-organized Demons' defense broke down. As a unit, the Demons' defense maintained their shape, anticipated well and tackled aggressively all day. The Chiefs' attack were to find no joy this day.
Showing tremendous quality and composure, the equalizing goal had little to no effect on DELCO. Immediately after the ensuing tap, the Demons went on the offensive. They're pressure was rewarded quickly when, after only two minutes, Andrew Duong slide a ball across the Chiefs' 18 to a waiting Kevin Pierce who found himself in the space. He was quickly closed down by three defenders. Pierce broke down the Chiefs' defenders, drove the end line and slide a hard ball low across the six yard box to a waiting Duong who redirected the cross for the 2nd Demons goal. DELCO would never look back.
From this point the half played out with the Demons maintaining the lion's share of the possession and the Chiefs resorting to long balls over the top to by-pass the midfield. This was the only way that the Chiefs were able to put any pressure at all on the stingy DELCO defense as the grouping of Dante Marini, Zach Murphy, Bryce Sheppard, Bobby Sutcliffe and Schmid owned the midfield. The DELCO midfield displayed a tremendous work rate closing players down and cutting off any channels the Chiefs had to their forwards.
Almost an exact replica of the first half, only two minutes in, Pierce is played a ball down the left side and found himself one-on-one with the defender. Pierce wrong-footed the defender at the top of the box and let go a ferocious shot beating the Chiefs' keeper just under the crossbar. Then in the 53rd minute Sutcliffe found Pierce again running down the left side and slotted a ball behind the Chiefs' defense. Pierce, presented with a difficult angle, chipped the keeper into the side netting for the fourth and final goal of the game.
The remainder of the half followed the majority of the game with DELCO maintaining possession and playing most of the time in the Chiefs' end. In one scary moment, the Chiefs' forward came in on the DELCO keeper, Bobby Rosato, high with studs up catching him just above the kneecap. This resulted in the second yellow card of the match. This event shouldn't tarnish an otherwise professional game played by both teams. DELCO now faces the Andromeda Titans from Texas tomorrow for the second game of their bracket.

Thursday Game
FC DELCO '91 vs. Andromeda Titans (TXN)
Orlando, FL - The second round of bracket play saw the FC DELCO Demons pitted against the Andromeda Titans of Texas at West Orange Soccer Complex this evening at 6:30p. From the opening tap the Demons dominated play moving the ball with ease. It's not that the Titans didn't have their share of the possession. Rather, their possession rarely amounted to any real offensive push and primarily stayed in their own defensive end.
The deadlock was broken in the 10th minute of play when Bobby Sutcliffe stopped a Titan offensive push by dispossessing their attacker in the midfield. Seeing an immediate counter opportunity, Sutcliffe played a dangerous ball behind the Titan defense to an on-rushing Kevin Pierce down the left side. What was developing as a clear scoring opportunity quickly broke down when Pierce's 1st touch let him down pushing the ball deep in to the box. Fighting to keep the opportunity alive, Pierce managed to keep his balance and cut the ball back towards goal. And, sensing an on-rushing Titan defender, Pierce threw himself at the ball and sliding it past the Titan keeper for the 1st goal of the game.
Then, in the 18th minute, off of a corner kick, Chris Makowski served a laser-like ball towards the near post. When the Titans were unable to clear the ball, Joseph Schmid found himself running onto the ball from the top of the box and pegged the ball past the Titan keeper for the 2nd goal of the game. The half ended with the Demons up 2 - nil and clearly in control of the game.
After the 2nd half tap, the Demons quickly picked up where they left off applying significant pressure to the Titan defense and showing good composure while in possession. The Titans found it very difficult play through the Demon midfield and subsequently started playing a more direct style. During a good spell of possession by the Titans, the Demons found themselves defending deeply in their own end. When the Titans lost possession the Demons caught the Titans flat in the back. Displaying an Arsenal-like style, the Demons played Paz Breezeatl past the Titans' line with 3 quick passes. This left the Titans center-back with only one option ... to foul Breezeatl from behind. However, Breezeatl fought off the Titans defender and chipped the on-rushing keeper for what was thought to be the 3rd goal of the game. Unfortunately, the assistant referee had raised his flag for the foul and conversation was held between the center official and the AR. They decided that the foul had happened prior to the shot and the center official claimed to have blown his whistle (although this reporter had heard nothing) terminating the play pulling the ball out of the goal. This left the Demons with a direct kick from about 20 yards out. Schmid took the kick and scored the 3rd goal of the game when the Titans keeper mishandled the ball.
Then, in the 67th minute, with the Demons showing plenty of confidence, Pierce found a streaking Voltaire Escalona down the left side isolating him with the Titans defender. Escalona turned the defender and got off a beautiful shot beating the keeper and finding the right side netting for the 4th goal of the game. With things seemingly running smoothly, the Demons uncharacteristically took their foot mentally off of the pedal.
In the 70th minute, the Titans earned a corner kick when Rosato made the save of the tournament parrying a hard-driving shot past the far post. The corner was served to the top of the 6 yard box and Demons' keeper, Bobby Rosato, looked destined to punch the ball clear. Unfortunately, Rosato was able to reach the ball through the mass of players. The ball ultimately found the back of the net off of a Titans' player shoulder. With the shut out gone and the Titans flush with new-found confidence, the Demons found themselves on the back foot for the first time in the tournament. The Titans, sensing that another goal would give them some respectability, pushed forwarded in the 76th minute against a Demons side that seemed to lose some shape and discipline. Capitalizing on a defensive error, the Titans winger was able to change the point of attack and found an open man at the top of the box who buried a beautiful shot past Rosato.
With the score now 4 - 2, the Demons righted the ship and regained their shape and composure. They saw the remaining minutes out without event netting their second win of the tournament. Tomorrow's game against the Bethesda Road Runners will be for the bracket win. The Demons have a slight advantage as they advance on a tie because of the goal differential tie breaker.

Friday Game
FC DELCO '91 vs. Bethesda Roadrunners (MD)
Orlando, FL - FC DELCO's tournament came to an abrupt halt today at the 2006 Disney Soccer Showcase with their 2-0 loss to the Region 1 Regional Champions Bethesda Roadrunners. In difficult rain conditions, and what could only best be described as a "physical" game, Bethesda prevailed to advance to the semi-final round tomorrow.
The game was basically played between the 18s for the entire first half with neither team showing a significant advantage. Then, in first half stoppage time, with DELCO pressing deep in the offensive half of the pitch, Bethesda sent a long ball over the top with the Demons attempting an offsides trap. Much was made about the call, or lack of call, by the DELCO coaching staff, but the Bethesda forward found himself all alone against the DELCO keeper (Bobby Rosato) and finished to put the Roadrunners up 1-nil at the whistle. It should be noted that the Bethesda forward, thinking that he was offsides, actually stop for a moment expecting the flag to go up...it never did. The first half also set the tone for the game with the number of fouls and yellow cards. Bethesda ultimately received 28 fouls and 4 yellow cards on the night. The Demons had 9 fouls and 3 cards themselves.
With the opening tap of the second half, DELCO looked to press early for the equalizer but the Bethesda midfield and defense were able to absorbed this pressure and right the ship for the remainder of the half. The second Bethesda score was the result of the wet conditions, when Rosato uncharacteristically let a dribbler slip under his body for the goal. The remainder of the game saw DELCO applying pressure and changing formations to force the attack to no avail. Bethesda was comfortably able to match the Demons intensity and see the game out for the win. Bethesda will face the Dallas Texans in the semi-finals tomorrow.
